Termite or Ant?  Can you tell the difference?

Do you know what the most common termite is in the U.S.?

 

Subterranean termites are the most common, and can be found in all 50 states.  They are the number one wood-destroying pests in the U.S.  They are known as subterranean because they live underground and in colonies.  They build tunnels known as “mud tubes,” which they use for their food source and protection.  Like other termite species, they feed on products containing cellulose.

 

In the U.S. alone, the annual cost of termite treatments and damages is estimated in the billions.

 

What can you do to prevent termites?

Since termites thrive on moisture it is important that you follow some basic preventive steps to protect your home from termite invasion. Here are some helpful tips.

Termite Prevention Tips

  • Keep gutters and downspouts clear of debris

  • Reduce humidity in crawl space areas with proper ventilation and moisture barriers

  • Firewood should be kept at least twenty feet from the home

  • All water is diverted from home foundations with proper drainage
